Fluent Form / Word Merchant CD Review By Undies

Artist: FLUENT FORM
Album: Word Merchant
Available: Out Now
Released By: Crate Cartel Records
Distributed By: Obese Records
CD Review By Undies
It’s been a few years now since we first heard "Chapters of Substance" (2008) the first release by Melbourne hip-hop heavyweight Fluent
Form, and let me tell you this emcee has travelled a very long way. Whereas you could see mass potential with "Chapters of Substance", and
then a much more refined and confident version on Melbourne classic "The Furnace" (2009), on "Word Merchant" you see a hyped up, almost deranged,
entanglement of lyrical fury.
Front to back this is not for the feeble minded or half-hearted. From the opener the album Word Merchant over a sparse hard hitting
Geko produced beat to the album closer this is littered with well thought out metaphors, bible references and Flueys signature gruff
swagger. All tracks are produced by Crate Cartel co-founder and artist Geko who rarely fails to disappoint production wise.
That’s not to say some beats here are slightly lacklustre but with 96% of them being dark hard hitting anthem type beats you will not be disappointed.
The weakest track seems to be Keep It Natural, and there’s nothing wrong with it, it just seems to get outshined by the other stand out
tracks. Jezebel's Conquests is one of the highlights, Fluent Form's story telling ability about female temptresses and flow really shine here
and fit the harpsichord laden beat perfectly. The guest spots on here compliment the album quiet well especially Lazy Grey and
Dialectrix, who both do great jobs due to their speedy delivery, complimenting Fluent's harsher delivery very well.
Fellow Crate Cartel label mates are contained on Human Heads, which is very impressive and full of serial verse toppers with veteran
Raven flowing so effortless you can see why he one of Melbourne’s best, and relative newcomer Maundz delivering with
the usual swagger which makes him such a pleasure to listen to, which is such a big deal then to say fluent steps up and puts one of his best verses
on this track. Deep tracks like Gravity show why this album works but the real stand out here destined to be an oz hip hop classic in the
same vein as early Lyrical Commission, is of course, Judas Iscariot. Performed over a haunting chorus sample, insanely dark
piano riffs and a huge bass line, this tale of betrayal is in the same sense as the bible story and the bible character, and is one that will be on
repeat for a while.
Handshakes is a story about wrong choices, again a standout, and it fits perfectly here, it’s this kind of track that Fluent does best and
reminds me a bit of short stories from "The Furnace". Geko even does a fine job going head to head on the mic on Hanzo Swords on a beat that
compliments his different voice very well.
On the last track, When I Know, you see a more personal side to Fluent who says “for my daughter the driving force behind it all”,
realising that sometimes he may be a bit much for the average listener, but a fitting end to a great album. Production wise and lyrically the one
emcee one producer formula has worked really well for these two. Even though this may not be for everyone for those that understand and realise what
they have here will be reminded in Word Merchant of why they started listening to hip hop in the first place. Raven said, "if you want to learn
how to rap listen to Word Merchant" and I wholeheartedly agree. Expect great things from the Cartel in the future.

Its all about swagger over at Crate Cartel.
Album is nice, I actually had it in my headphones walking through the rain earlier and it made me want to punch a homeless guy.
