Review By: Undies
There are goods and bads about this album, generally the flow and beats are alright, delivery wise it's fine and the beats can sometimes grab your
attention quite profusely. Five years ago this would have been seen as a good album, but these days there is such a wide gap between the good and the
bad. There’s been an influx of dudes proclaiming to be rappers and are the height of mediocrity. Then there’s the other end of the spectrum where hip
hop in Australia is being produced to such high levels it puts the American market to shame. "Opportunity Knocks" sits somewhere in the
middle. It’s not good and it’s not bad. I had no troubles listening to it but it seemed truly to be lacking heart and enthusiasm. I truly believe that
Solex could be good, he has talent, but weak braggadocio and almost crossover tracks like "Father Figures" do not help his
cause at all.
People may disagree with me, some may not, but it all seems repetitive and over done right from the start. It may be the albums direction that doesn’t
grab me, some tracks are done really well but in this sea of almost monotonous mediocrity I don’t quite see the charisma and passion that is really
starting to come through on the more stellar releases. It almost seems as if the MC doesn’t know what he wants here, does he want to be more
commercial and reach a wide audience? It seems that way but it seems like the wrong way to release a first album. The guest spots seem to outshine him
with tracks such as "The Message" featuring DNA who is also the resident producer on this album. I liked "Sinking
Ship", "A New World" featuring Vexed, "Disturbance" and "The Message", I think they are quite well
done, delivered, produced well and have passion and charisma. Even the softer sadder tracks have sort of been done before and remind me almost of
Horrorshow but just not as good. It’s a fair effort, it’s not bad but it’s not amazing. I will give Solex one chance
more because I believe when he finds his feet he does have talent and personality to work with but for now this album is just too safe and not
experimental enough for me. Give it a chance because you may see things that I have overlooked and may just be something you enjoy.
