Yeah Pavlich has been a bit off the boil this year. It is the first average season he has played in the past decade.
The bloke is very underrated – IMO one of the best 20 players over the past decade, yet outside of WA no one seems to recognise it.
I am not aware of anyone in the history of AFL/VFL who has won All-Australian selection as a midfielder, key defender and key forward.

Cometti named his AA team in The West Australian today. He did that annoying thing of shoehorning in a million midfielders.
There are THIRTEEN in the 22 he picked. THIRTEEN guys who always play midfield (not even counting the ruckman).
On his bench he has only midfielders…no back up ruckman to Cox!!
So either Cox magically plays 100% of the time in the ruck or you would have to play Franklin in there which would be crazy.
There’s also no back up defenders or forwards…just midfielders.
The ONLY point of an All-Australian team is that you select the best possible side based on performances this season.
His side, like many others, looks nothing like a real football team. It’s just a list of good players.

The thing about Sandilands is that he has never really known or learned how to play footy.
He was recruited because he was gargantuan. Even at 20 years old, 211cm and 115kg he wasn’t having a big impact in the WAFL – where the average
ruckman was like 195cm and 95kg.
The reason being that he had no idea how to use his bulk or his height or how to read the play. He has improved greatly at using his size to his
advantage.
But he still struggles with the basic skills – kicking, marking, tackling and, most bafflingly, tapping the ball.
After 10 years of AFL he still cannot kick for shit and hence handballs at every opportunity. Despite his massive reach advantage he rarely takes pack
marks.
How so many experts rated him equal to, or even better than, Cox for several years there is beyond me. Cox kicks beautifully on both feet so when he
gets 20 touches he has typically had a dozen kicks and used those to set up a lot of play and act as a linkman.
When Sandi gets 20 touches, 15 of them are handballed off to guys aimlessly running past and the other five are kick-in-hope long bombs or short
sideways passes.
Cox can also take a grab, making him a threat around the ground and, most importantly, inside 50m.
But the most perplexing thing is what sketone and Richie mentioned…his inability to tap the ball to the advantage of team mates.
The great ruckmen of the past 30 years like Cox, Madden, Everitt (very under rated), Wynd and Rehn make the most of their hitouts by either dropping
it in a team mates lap or hitting it forward in front of them so they can run onto it and attack.
Sandi rarely does the latter and hence is very predictable and his taps get picked off by the opposition.
Anyway, this was a bit of a rant but as a ruckman myself I’m passionate about the position and how it is played.
