Derek
Just watched the pilot of this new drama-comedy by Gervais and Merchant. It is fucking brilliant...a huge return to form for the boys after Life's Too
Short, which lacked the heart that was so central to the Office and Extras.
Ricky hams it up a little bit too much at times as the mentally-challenged Derek, but there are some great moments of comedy and sensitivity. As a
fanatical fan of Gervais, I'm stoked.
Watch it.

The UK media loves making a big fuss over whatever Gervais does. Some were panning the show even before it had been screened or advance copies sent to
the media, claiming that it was making fun of intellectually disabled people.
IMO the pilot quickly disproved that theory.

It could've done without the slapstick pratfalls.

Yeah it wasn't perfect but given it was originally intended to be only a non-broadcast pilot I thought it was very good.
Stacks of potential.

This show is fucking fantastic. Gervais is legitimately brilliant here. My mum hated Gervais, couldn't stand him. But she loved this.

This is a great series.
I feel Gervais' portrayal of Derek is heartfelt, and the series does well to dignify the elderly.
I'm not sure how many episodes can me made out of the typical scenarios that a nursing home would experience without repeating itself though.
I think the danger ~ is that we will end up with a situation where we end up comparing apples and pears, and totally forget about the humble potato

In interviews he doesn't confirm anything about Derek's mental state.

To me it's obvious that he's mentally challenged, but I suppose it's how you define that which is the issue.
I don't think they'll run out of material in this setting because it's unlikely the show will go past 2 seasons (12 episodes) like their previous
work.
And, yeah, Karl cutting loose on that council dude was fucking awesome.
