Recording Percussion

Im looking at taking advantage of the upcoming carbon bonus getting added to my Austudy by buying a half decent but cheap condenser mic for recording percussion.. Mainly shakers and the like but also bongos and whatever else I manage to come up with.

Was thinking of an NT3 which is around my price range and seeing as I dont have any condensers at all it would be a good starting point. I've also heard the Studio Projects mic's are good for the price.

Anybody have any experience with recording home made percussion instruments and if so what mic's around the $200-$300 range would ya's recommend ?

yeh, i record percussion a fair bit.

i use my rode nt1-a, though i've been swinging the other way and wanting to grab a dynamic mic for percs.

My nt1-a is ok, i record my percussion in my vocal booth but it always comes out pretty boxy, prob just needs some eq on the mixer.

Only prob is it requires phantom power(unless your running it off 9v) Im looking at a sm57 for percs, should have one anyway really as far as mic arsenal is concerned, fucking love the way they sound, and its dynamic, so technically you could have it always plugged into your mpc, ready to record nasty tuppaware lunchbox kicks, cheap coin shakers etc.

Yeah ill be grabbing an SM57 as well for just a general workhorse mic. So do you always record your perc in the booth ?? Why not record somewhere where theres a bit more air if its boxy ?

yeah I'm not sure you should be using condensers for percussion unless they are overheads.

SM57 is probably the best bet for a standard to work from for percussion & horns, and a larger diaphram mic for bass drum.

condensers are not built for loud transient sounds. You can get some half decent drum mic kits for a few hundred bucks.

What Newsense said. Except I usually use a Neumann KM184 for Hi Hats.

All depends on the sound you are after.

Condensers are great for percussion .. especially if im only mainly going to be messing with shakers, rattles and the like. Im definitely not going to be placing a small diaphragm condenser inside a kick drum if thats what you're thinking haha.

I guess im just interested in what cheap but half decent condensers people have had experience with.

Thats just it. I only have a minimal selection of mic's to play with at TAFE so just getting some more ideas atm.

If I had the money for a Neumann id grab one ;)

i dont think a neuamann will come in that 200-300 mark he is after MADFX.

i guess i always record in the booth because its reasonably treated, limits outside noise (dogs barking etc)

sm57 doubles as a drum mic, you can use it on cabs, vocals, persussion, pretty much anything!! that and they are rock solid, dropping one of these isnt going to make you cry, and they can withstand much more abuse than say a ribbon mic

Cheap is usually not a good idea in this case, what you want is a
condensor microphone with the capability of handling high levels
of SPL preferably no less than 130dB.

They can be great for percussion as many engineers have proven this.

Yeah dox I was thinking of using the SM57's for close miking something like my bongos and then using condensers to capture the HF/ambience. Have also heard good things about using some Ribbons for room mics in these situations.

MADFX - You can get decent microphones without spending thousands .. you're trippin if you think otherwise.

Something we use alot for live applications.

that idea of using a condensor to capture room ambience / HF is great, never thought of that, might be why my bongos are always a headache to mix.......some thing i might explore when i get a dynamic mic.

sennheiser also make some pretty reasonable mic's, mate had one he used to use for mic'ing his amp, worked a treat.
