Most Hip Hop nights I went to, I used to be proud to see all the different races in the room enjoying the same thing, when normally they couldnt relate to shit. Never really heard any Racism come from true heads,, mainly wack cunts making noise for their names sake, or whatever.

Dope verse ( extra ) but damn those last few bars had me wanting to wipe my face like Id been spat on.

Didn't read all of the thread, but have a couple of basic things to say:

1) Jimblah is a good rapper. I always enjoy what he offers and this was no different. A song like this could get JJJ's attention (as an uniwtting agent of cultivating and perpetuating the idiot, racist, festival hip-hop music/image but with the intention of being viewed as bleeding-hearts, empathising with a cause - oh the irony).

2) Jimblah has the right to say everything he did. If he has encountered racism first-hand or otherwise. While I don't see racism as something that's inherent in "Australian hip-hop culture" I could easily imagine it being a part of "Oz Hip Hop culture" (I see these as different things).

3) There was only a culture of acceptance and respect when I came up with hip-hop. I went to a very ethnically diverse school (always have, which was a blessing and a privilege), which gave birth to a lot of my city's most prominent and prolific rappers and graffiti writers etc. "Acceptance" is a terrible word (therefore not the one I'm looking for) because it sort of connotes 'tolerance', where really it was just understanding that we are all the same (equals) and deserve to be treated thusly.

My heart goes out to Jimblah because it's obviously come to the crunch for him and that's sad (that someone, another human, put this feeling in him).

Edit: I also want to mention that I've never seen, heard of or otherwise encountered people in the local hip-hop scene exhibiting racist attitudes or behaviours.

It's naming names, if there really are any to name (most of the racist fuckwits are 'fans' or bottom feeders) - and also point out, question and engage with racist people as you come across them (if you have the stamina/strength to do so).

Calling people out on their bullshit and refusing to let their dumbfuck comments slide is important. There are always going to be times when it's much more prefereable to stay quiet and avoid confrontation I suppose, but hey, that's why God invented the internet.

also hip hop opened my eyes to many different people and cultures..where i wouldn't have had this opportunity if we didn't have something common to talk about..

i think what nerje was getting at is that sometimes it can be patronising and presumptuous and is actually racist in itself. For example, i knew this indigenous woman who moved to melbourne from up north with her kids. She got a job, worked hard and when she went to check her bank account, half of it was gone. It was later revealed that it had been with held and replaced with coles vouchers, purely for the fact of where she had come from. she was deemed incapable of spending correctly and providing for her kids. That is fucked. She was devastated. Obviously it's a bit of a stretch from some necessary institutions and support servies to help correct an imbalance, but there is a superiority complex and a foul judgement which bleeds into our society that is often misguided and condecsending.

Also, is this not fucked that when a native (and dope) rapper speaks about racism, cunts start grillin him demanding for details?? I kinda think its a bit cynical. And shitty. jimblah is more switched on than alot of your favourite rappers.

That story about your friend sounds a bit odd to me. the govt can't replace a wage from a private company with vouchers from another private company, ie. coles vouchers surely? For starters that'd be lining the pockets of Coles/myer with someones hard earned.

I don't think anyone Is grilling anyone. Or denying there is a racist element to ozhh, with it's shitty sounding bogan accents and prevalence of white kids. It's just a bit vague and Scattergun and leaves you wondering what he means exactly. If I say your a dumbarse and don't give an example or explanation it doesn't hold as much weight.

It seems lots of people want to blame all of the bad aspects of local hip hop on the ‘Ozzie hip hop’ crowd and simply say ‘our scene’ has no problems.

This is bullshit.

I know people who have been into both US hip hop and Australian hip hop for 10+ years, people that have been going to gigs and getting involved in ‘the scene’ way before Bliss n Eso blew up and festivals were even popular. These same people are nationalistic, love BnE and HTH and basically could be thrown into the ‘Ozzie hip hop’ basket at one glance of their Southern Cross tattoo.

The ‘Ozzie hip hop’ crowd that people so easily dismiss didn’t just pop up over night. People that fit that crowd have been in the ‘Aussie hip hop’ crowd for years.

It’s Australia, these traits (nationalism, racism etc) are visible in Australian culture, and everyone here has admitted that, it’s naive to think those traits so engrained in our population have somehow eluded the ‘Aussie hip hop scene’ and everyone within has risen above. It’s nice to think, but far from true.

The festival crowd are not either 'the scene' or 'a part of the scene' though.

They are more just 'lowest common denominator, poorly educated, Triple J listening, latent homosexual bodybuilding homophobes' that go to Hoods or Drapht shows being like "Fuck yeah! Ozzie Hip Hop! Woooh!"

*That's not a diss to the Hoods or Drapht obviously. They make great music and are great dudes. It's not their fault in any conceivable way that their wider appeal has made them accessible to the people described above.

I'm referring to the actual culture of hip-hop (people who engage in it on a level beyond going to an occasional big-name event) and, more to the point, when it only existed as an underground phenomenon.

I think what you're confusing is the fact that some people are just racist to begin with, regardless of what 'scene' they end up in.

Edit: I'm really not defending the scene (especially not as it's been defined by some people in this thread), and I definitely believe that racism could occur in it. I've just never encountered it myself and, quite to the contrary, have always found it to embrace ethnic and cultural diversity. Give peace a chance and all of that.

i don't know how it got to the vouchers honestly but that is what happend. something like 10 cents of every dollar goes to coles or woolworths in this country, it shouldn't be entirely suprising ha

i see what you're saying about the vagueness but i dunno it's just like this is australia. the guys a native. need he have any reason to question white people for any reason? i mean i know its our beloved hip hop that's got some potentially upsetting people involved but still, in context i think you don't have to dig deep anywhere to find a whole lot of hate mongers sullying the landscape.

edit: i just double checked that, its 23 cents of every dollar.

I would just like to point out that ITT

[x] I don't think anyone is denying racism exists, but questioning how prevalent or acceptable it is in 'OzHiPHoP'
[x] In this way i didn't see it as cynical, more of a curious questioning nature - who are these people? [If they are worth mentioning they must be someone worth mentioning, so mention them.]
[x] I was never suggesting that racism is a simple problem, I am suggesting that being anti-racism is a pretty straightforward ideal tho.

So something happened to some lady of which we have no real specific information but somehow verifys something?Again its just not convincing. I have no doubt at all that Australia is racist and there would be some terrible things going down on a daily basis, I just havent learnt much from anything in this thread. I dont think Jimblah has to do anything, he can rap about whatever he wants, i would have found the verse better if it was a bit more specific on what the problem is. Still a nice verse.

Also you sure "native" isnt a shitty word to use? It sounds very Captain Cook. Could be wrong.

The devils in the details.

Cunt that booked studio is a no show so Im siting pondering, I wrote a essay. I title it

Phil Gektor, Im White an Not Proud.

I think why Im interested in racism, is because it seems like alot of the time white people are racist inherently, without even realising it, and there isnt a clear guide to "Not been a racist white person". If you do nothing about the racial equalities of the world your partaking in the big racist clusterfuck that is planet earth, however people that go and help african kids and stuff are often seen as having a hero complex or something. I guess thats why I was arguing with Mark563 a couple of months ago, when he was implying that Australians dont really understand race in Hip Hop because our scene is so white. Well as a white Australian who has a white family, white wife, white kids, majority white friends, and has what ever inherent qualities I have as a seriously white motherfucker I dont want to be racist. Am I? Am I doing something wrong? I actually think black people are the best, there swag shits all over white people, I loved rap mega since i was a little kid, all my heros are black. Apart from Darren milane.

Talking to Darah a couple months back he gave the impression it doesnt really count if artists like Briggs make a name for himself through affiliation with G.E, he wanted to see Aboriginal artists make a name for themselves, so it rules out me trying to "stop racism in ozhh" by trying to give free beats to some Aboriginal rappers or whatever, shits just corny no one wants some ashamed white saps charity/beats.

So as a small part of Hip Hop in Australia, and white person, if I am involved in a racist scene I would like to know, how is the racism manifest ? What needs to be done about it? Its cool to just say its racist thats fine, but thats just going to get ppls backs up. Not fix the problem.

Sort of wrote this on the trot. Dont usually think about this type of shit. Tried to just be honest, feel free to cut my essay to ribbons. xox. Phil.
