Ruxton: The main problem with the room is that it has specular reflections shooting all over the place - significant flutter echos and no small
amount of standing waves at various frequencies and in various positions within the room. It's not much good for mixing, either. But I tend to mix
elsewhere. I've tried messing with mic placement, which can improve the recorded sound but it's far from what I would call "decent".
I'd love to treat the whole room and did run it through Room EQ Wizard quite a while back as well as run the data through some programs that measured
room modes and suggested treatment. To achieve an ideal amount of absorption, there's almost not enough wall space in the room (obviously, it
wouldn't have to be ideal). The main problem is, anything absorption/diffusion treatments that I make would have to be free-standing for the whole
room. Essentially, I'd have to build a room inside a room a la a proper studio design to achieve satisfactory treatment of the acoustic problems.
In the end, when I balanced out the pricing, it would work out cheaper, more practical and better (considering the limited budget I have) to isolate a
section of the room with a free-standing and (at least partially) decoupled vocal booth. Bear in mind, tho, if I thought I could achieve satisfactory
treatment of this particular room without voiding my rental bond - I'd much prefer to do that.
Anyway, I have a mate who's a chippy/shopfitter and has outfitted a few rehearsal studios and home studios before. So I'm going to chat to him about
it and consider my options.
Cheers.

I read that as chippy/shoplifter.
I don't think you ever really have a great space with no standing waves in the home. I think you can still mix you just need to know that if you roll
your chair back 1 mtr the bass will completely disappear or that you get your subs by touching the speaker or the back wall. In some ways mixing in a
more realistic listening environment can be advantageous.
I'd just create a dead area for recording. Just deaden the living shit out of it.

What mic/per do you use? You always have the option of trading up for a dynamic mic a la the SM7b which will record far less room than other mics

Yeah, I was thinking of going for a high quality dynamic mic anyway. Just coz dynamic mics suit my voice more, I reckon. At the moment, I've got
access to a range of decent-ish condesor mics (Rode NTK, Studio Projects C1, AKGC3000B and a Neumann KLM85i for instrument stuff). The Studio
Projects mic has given me the best quality recording in the space I currently use - picks up less room sound than the others.
And, nah, the sex tourists video was performed by Marksman. Beat by Wisdom2th. Recorded at Wisdom2th's studio.

The vocal booth is definatley achievable on a $1000 - $1500 budget depending on what materials you use , with out being as dodgy as using 3 doors and
angle brackets . I just built 4 walls , a ceiling and floor out of framing timber , using 15mm ply to line the floor , and acoustic grade plaster
board to line the internal walls . you can even get accoustic grade plasterboard glue . then insulate with R2 accoustic batts , and line the outside
with mdf as its quite cheap .The inside was lined with the typical "egg carton " looking foam from clark rubber. I made this booth bolt together with
M12 rod , nuts and washers so once unassembled its easily moved by 2 people . It only took me a day and a half to build but I am a carpenter , Im sure
your mate could knock something up just as quick .

I would go another layer acoustic grade plasterboard on the outside too. Layers layers layers for soundproofing. The fire resistant plaster I's
thicker denser and cheaper than the acoustic stuff too.. Also try find a second Hand external heavy door, if you do get a hollow door fill it with
sand.

I wanted to use that fire grade stuff for that very reason , but the the guy I did the job for wouldnt hear of it . I also thought using mdf on the
outside was a stupid move considering the amount of money spent on the soundcheck plasterboard . But as the saying goes " the customer is always right
" , even though he was wrong .

Well I'm not a expert but if it's dense/denser and thicker it's got to be more soundproof? Unless they make the acoustic stuff less resonant. But I'd
think the way to do that would be to increse density.

I'm not too fussed about soundproofing - I don't live in a noisy area and I don't suspect that the reflections in the room have quite high enough SPL
to punch through even relatively light material. I just want something that allows me to control the nasty ambience a bit. Dead, but not so dead
that it sounds dead. If that makes sense.
Cheers for the feedback, folks. You've given me shit to think about.
