yet more sampling issues

i am just finding my feet on the whole sampling thing and hoping someone could help a brotha out on a couple of things...

(1) Extracting voice/vocals from a song - I have been attempting (with little success) to do this using the Noise Reduction function of Cool Edit 2000. I have usually tried to save the instrumental sound (without voice) as a fft noise profile and then loaded that profile in and tried to apply noise reduction to the section containing the spoken part that I am trying to sample. This tends to give me close to what I want but, depending on how much I specify the dB level to be adjusted, it will either leave me with the voice sounding like a robot or the instrumental part still easily hearable in the background. Is there any better software or methods for this process because on most hip hop songs the voice samples always sound so crisp. I hope at least someone understands what my problem is and if not I can post some examples up to show what I am getting.

(2) Instrument Samples - where do u find instrument samples if u want to play long notes? Is there any way to extend the length of a sample (e.g. piano or sax) so it sounds longer?

muchos gracias

uh

well u can never totally extract vocals from an already mixed down track, most dj's who cut phrases into tracks usually use accapellas (only vocals)

u can make a note sound like its sustained, this is my method and alot of producers use this, premo for example uses this alot, basically take a part of the note and repeat it on every even beat in the bar, meaning start it at the first kick, and loop it at the next snare u get me? i'm shit at explaining, but yea the sound from the drums covers up the loop point enough to make the note sound like its sustained, then mix it down and add a decent amount of reverb to cover it up a little more, hope this helps

yeh man that does help a lot.... so i need to try to repeat the note during the snare sound and use those effects to cover up the changeover...ok i'll experiment with that....

if anyone else can shed light on either of my questions too then jump on in...

peace.

I was always wanting to get the vocals real crisp too with no success, but recently I've been trying to use the background stuff in the samples to make it sound even better....
I've found some just will never fit in but sometimes the music in the background will make it sound heaps fatter

the background noise that comes witht he vocals can be a bonus. i seperated a bassline by adjusting the EQ levels over and over again on this sample. While it was mostly removed what was left really added to the track.

you can often find samples of an instrument playing one long note on the net. if you can adjust the pitch etc to make new notes you can make a tune.

you can also put that sound in cool edit or something else and look if there is a structure in that file, if you can find places where a special part of that sound repeats itself. dunno, it's hard to explain, but you can take this section, copy it and insert it either before, or after exactly that section.
hope i coulda made you that a little clear...
