how are you getting your room sound proofed? I'm thinking of doing the same thing but dont know where to start.
you'll also need a mixing desk and a preamp too most likely but see what other cats say

yeh dope.. im thinking of lining the walls with a kind of carpet or a woven rug or something similiar.. then covering it all with empty egg cartons.
sounds homebrand as but its suppose to be a good, inexpensive way to do it.

While carpet and shit on the walls helps, the best soundproofing is done in your wall construction by using both air gaps and thick insulation with
acoustic plaster. Carpet and stuff will do more changing the sound (deadening it down). But of course since you don't wanna tear down your walls,
egg cartons will be fine, plus you could doubleglaze your windows if you wanna be more full on about it. I don't really know a lot about sound
proofing. I'm sure there's articles around that can help you.

okay after following "lapse's" excellent advice and doing some research, I'm considering either;
- RODE NT2
- RODE K2
- RODE NTK
yo lapse or anyone else who knows, which one of these mics are preferable? |
yo lapse, if u can offer some input about this I'd be grateful. thanks mate

I've only heard good things about the NT2. Haven't used one myself though. My stepdad did some recording through one and I've heard sax
and shit recorded through it and it sounded good. The NT2 is basically a fairly big step up from the NT1 for quality. NT1's have always been good
though so I assume the NT2 is really up there.
Both the K and K2 are tube condensers so you get that nice tube sound, if you're into that. The K2 has a variable polar pattern so I think
that's why it's more expensive. Check them all out and go by ears, peoples opinions etc.
Edit: Oh yeah more shit for the mics 101 that is relivent.
tube refers to the fact that the mic is powered by tubes, whereas the nt2 is a solidstate mic (you've probably heard about solidstate and tubes
with guitar amps). this affects the mics character in terms of sound. typically, a solidstate mic is more transparent than a tube mic (less
colouration on the original sound). tube condensers, are usually quite warm and natural sounding with softer high end.

aye yo lapse!!!
you're fucking legend mate and if I can ever return the favour then let me know...
Just a couple more question though!
I'm going to (most likely) get a RODE NTK and will need to get a basic "mixing desk" as well to be able to use the mic.
I'm leaning towards NOT getting a "pre-amp" UNTIL I can afford to get a really good one, but have been told that with a decent mixing
desk and some good compression etc/ I can get good results in the meantime.
Can you recommned a suitable mixer or at least what I need to look for in a mixer?
I'll mainly just be using it for vocals and I guess my keyboard and turntables and possibly some live recording (guitar or something) so I doubt
I'd need many inputs....
any help here would be AWESOME mate!
these are the ones I'm considering;
Behringer Eurorack UB1204 Pro
This is a mixer whose small size belies its incredible versatility and audio performance. You get 8 balanced high-headroom line inputs, 4 Invisible
Mic Preamps (IMPs), 2 aux sends per channel (1 pre fader for monitoring applications and 1 post fader for external FX devices). There are 2 subgroups
with separate outputs for added routing flexibility and 2 multi-functional stereo aux returns with flexible routing round off the list of high-quality
features.

or this
Behringer Eurorack UB1204 FX Pro
Essentially an expanded version of the UB1204-PRO. It has all the same features as found in the UB1204-PRO, plus an integrated 24-bit digital stereo
FX processor with 99 great-sounding VIRTUALIZER presets. There are also solo and PFL functions on all channels as well as a pre/post fader switchable
aux send for monitoring/FX applications

The FX pro offers more routing cabalities but personally I reckon those in built effects units are pretty shit, so don't buy the mixer for the
FX. As for inputs and everything, it seems like it's all there, you'll wanna make sure you can go out to your card from that mixer, probably
through the main outs and into 1 and 2 on your card? your card is a 2 in 2 out right?
i don't have a problem with behringer though some people talk their shit down, they are decent if you are talking decent in terms of what you get
for what you pay for, but of course there are better small desks. The preamps on behringer gear are okay and that desk will provide phantom power for
your microphone. I've done a lot of recording through beringer mixers and they are fine for just running shit through and maybe light eqing if
you need to. We have one here.
If you can tell me a bit more about your soundcard I could suggest something.

details;
2 x 2 analog I/O
24-bit/96kHz fidelity
S/PDIF digital I/O with 2-channel PCM
SCMS copy protection control
digital I/O supports surround-encoded AC-3 and DTS pass-through
1 x 1 MIDI I/O
zero-latency monitoring
software controlled 36-bit internal DSP digital mixing/routing
gold-plated RCA jacks
Apple G5 compatible
includes Maximum Audio Tools software bundle

I agree with what you said about not needing the FX unit on the mixer.
I look forward to your suggestions! thanks heaps for your help aye!

you can probably get any mixer that has a split main out, like 1 and 2 or l and r and go from split stereo cable to rca and it'll plug from your
mixer as jacks to your soundcard as rca jacks. then you would plug your mic into the mixer.
what do you intend to do with the recordings? are they going to be commercial, or just hobby. what sorta sound quality do you want and i'll try
suggest something.

I got an NT-1 running through a UB1002. Does the trick, yet to see full potential due to dodgy soundcard plus now need a vocal booth coz the NT-1
picks up everything.

in regards to making a vocal booth, ill give you a rundown of one i am planning to build in the very near future.
basically, its just a three sided fold out wall.
all you really need for this, is six large sheets of plywood, and whole bunch of foam cutoffs (attainable at places like clark rubber), six hinges,
and a handfull of screws and bolts.
the sheets of plywood should be about two meters tall (or around 15-20 cms minimum above the tallest mc's head) and about one and a half metres
wide.
lay three sheets on the floor and cover them all in foam, leaving about 3cms clear on each side. lay the second sheet on top of the foam, so it is
lined up perfectly with the sheet on the bottom of the foam. mark up a spot for bolts on each corner of the plywood, to allow for bolting them
together. four in total should do the trick. bolt them together, and do the same with the remaining two.
now, after a bit of pissfarting around, you should have three foam filled walls of the same shape and size.
now witht he 3cms you left on the side of the insides of the wall, this is where you will put your hinges. using a bit of commen sense and mechanical
knowledge, you should be able to hook them up, so you will have a three walled "booth".
to use it, simply put it in a against a wall (use the solid wall as the fourth booth wall).
if you require a tad extra proofing, simply throw a blanket of some sort over the top. but remember, this will cut off the light inside, so its best
to you a desk lamp with a clip on it on the top of the wall.
this should pretty much clear up any queries on making a very simple, cheap and effective (not to mention kinda ugly) booth for your vocal takes.
edit - keep in mind this is a very simple, and probably one of the more easier to build booths. there are heaps better one you can build, but this one
is simple and effective.
