In the early 1980s the population was increased by the introduction of several hundred thousand Javanese. Cultural differences between the indigenous population and the Indonesians about the 'Javanization' of Irian Jaya exacerbated tensions. By the year 2000 the population of the province was around 2.4 million. Despite the richness of Papua's resources, the people are among Indonesia's poorest and most deprived.

Estimates indicate that up to 300,000 people have died there since the uprising began in 1963.
