As one of the driving forces behind WA music and arts collective ‘The Community’, songwriter, producer, poet and performer Mathas has finally began garnering a lot of national attention over the last two years. With four successive singles gaining triple j Rotation, national tours in support of Joelistics & The Funkoars, and a slew of awards under his belt it’s been a great time for music with a message. To keep the good news flowing, as of this week, Mathas has found a new home in Sydney-based label Big Village Records.
To label head Joel Rapaport, it seemed only fitting that Mathas should be their next signing,
“Big Village has always looked for artists that exist on the forefront and fringe of hip hop music, and make great music with honesty and soul. There is really no better example of this than Mathas. All the work he has done with The Community Records in Perth is really inspiring for us as well, as it began with similar ideals that Big Village had, to create a collective identity for hip hop, soul and electronica, putting out music independently and supporting musicians that we love.”
Along with the Big Village announcement, Mathas releases the fan-made music video for current single ‘Free Shit’, a lyrical journey through the minefield of modern consumerism and its role in a child’s upbringing.
This clever little fan clip was created by local Perth VJ Tristan Garner (aka COMBS) by weaving together old, public domain, black & white advertising from the 1940-50s in his own spare time.
Mathas will release his highly anticipated sophomore LP Armwrestling Atlas via Big Village Records & The Community Records in October 2015.
