Last night in Perth shit got real, with the Grand Final of the epic Mom’s Spaghetti competition, Bar 459 at the Rosemount hit capacity three times over. Not bad for Wednesday night in Perth. As the joint was filled with friends and family of each of the 11 finalists, there was an ebb and flow into the beer garden that allowed everyone to catch at least a few of the performances happening inside.
This tongue in cheek titled tournament is a unique set up crafted by DJ and Producer Rob Shaker of Shake Down Studios. It moved away from a traditional battle comp and saw MC’s submit the cream of their tracks for pre-selection, and then perform one track each during the first two rounds. There was initially 46 MC’s that entered the competition and last night each of the 11 finalists performed three tracks each. It was specifically set up to show up and coming talent in WA.
The judging panel, consisting of, Optamus, Dazastah, Mortar, Bitter Belief, Rob Shaker, all from the renown SBX crew, and Maggot Mouf, Kogz and Mat Rafle, judged the MC’s based on both their recorded tracks and their live performance.
After performances by Seasta Chani, who just dropped her debut LP, Ollie Regal, and Inveigh Slang it was time for the finals. Altty & L Fire seemed to be crowd favourite heading into the event, but in the end after some dope performances by all, the winners were announced.
